6 January 2025 – Kalofer, Bulgaria

Yordanovden (Epiphany) is one of the biggest Christian holidays. This is the day when John the Baptist baptized Jesus Christ in the Jordan River. In Bulgaria, the holiday is celebrated with a church service, accompanied by a solemn procession, in which the priest goes to a river or reservoir and throws the cross into the water. Traditionally, an odd number of guys throw themselves to catch him. It is believed that whoever catches it first will be very healthy and everyone will be lucky. Especially interesting is the tradition in Kalofer, where in the cold waters of Tundzha river young people not only seek the cross, but also play a traditional male-dance (horo). More information about the feast of Epiphany can be found at https://kalofer.bg/?tag=%D0%B9%D0%B
