Munich – The Capital of Bavaria

Associated mainly with beer and football, Munich is so much more. It is a true palette of historical sites, cultural evets and futuristic buildings. Wherever you go, whatever time you have in the city, you will always find something new and exciting in Munich, which will enhance your sympathy.
Undoubtedly, one of the most beautiful places in Munich is Marienplatz – the central square in the old town. Here the Neues Rathaus (New Town Hall) is situated with magnificent Glockenspiel (carillon) which at 11 a.m. brightly painted mechanical figures reenact famous events in the city’s history. This is the fourth-largest carillon in Europe. You can also climb the steps of the Town Hall or take an elevator for one of the most panoramic views of Munich.
A few steps away is the gorgeous Münchner Dom (Munich Cathedral) called Frauenkirche (our dear lady’s church). Its twin towers survived during the massive bombings during WWII, but almost the whole interior was destroyed. The attractions that survived nowadays enchant the visitors. At the entrance, for example there is the Teufelstritt, or Devil’s Footstep. According to legend this black footprint represents the place, where the devil stood when he curiously regarded the ridiculed the “windowless” church that Halsbach had built. In baroque times, the columns hide little windows and the high altar would obscure the one window at the very end of the church, which is visible now at the entrance. The cathedral can hold approximately 20 000 people and it is among the largest hall churches in southern Germany.

St. Peter’s church (Peterskirche) is another gorgeous building with very high bell tower dated 13th-century. It provides amazing panoramic view that is the award of climbing 306 steps.
Only 5 minutes away stands another beautiful yellow church Theatinerkirche (Church of St. Kajetan). It was completed in 1690 and it is a triple-domed church with Italian-baroque façade.
Across the church stays Feldhernhalle – an open air-loggia constructed between 1841 and 1844, using the model of Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence. Two gorgeous marble lions guard the lovely construction.
Munich is not only old and traditional buildings, here is situated one of the most fashionable street in Europe, the local Champs-Elysee is called Maximilianstrasse and is lined with boutiques and houses of fashion. Another obligatory attraction here are the local beer houses with quality beer and tasty sausages. You can even decide to make a picknik in one of the many city parks.
The attractions in Munich are hard to be counted or visited in one day. That is the reason the city to be so popular among tourists who visit it more than twice.

We visited again the city, but this time with kids. We liked a lot the zoo, where we spent almost a day. Other places we recommend for kids are the Sea Life Aquarium, as well as the many museums such as the Deutsches Museum (the largest natural history museum in the world, which also has a separate section Children’s Kingdom for children from 3 to 8 years old), the Bayern Museum – for all football fans and BMW Welt – the BMW Museum for race car fens.

We were with a 2-years-old child, so we spent 3 days in Wolfratshausen, a few stations away with S-Bahn from Munich. The town is very picturesque with many playgrounds and beer gardens, but we chose it because of the fabulous forest Freizeitpark Marchenwald, which we visited for 2 consecutive days and it seemed like we were really in the world of fairy tales. For the first time I’ve visited such a nice park made especially for the toddlers – on all carousels children climb with their parents and together they have fun. There are small houses full of fairy-tale characters who tell their tales. Personally, I liked the most the talking tree, which also told stories. I highly recommend this park to all parents with small children.
