RATTENBERG, AUSTRIA’S SMALLEST TOWN

It is the smallest historic town in Austria, spanning just 10 hectares and has 400 inhabitants. The picturesque town is nestled on the Inn River, 47 km from Innsbruck and is a popular tourist attraction.

Not only does its small size make it easy to explore, but also its distinct pedestrian center, which consists of colorful houses dating back to the 15th century. Rattenberg may be small in size, but it is large in beauty. Each house competes with the others and attracts the eyes of tourists.

Best time to visit: all year round, the city is especially beautiful during Christmas markets, when it is all lit with torches and candles.

How to get here: A train passes through the city, or it can be easily reached by car, as at the beginning of the city there is a large parking lot.
Typical foods and drinks: Tyrolean cuisine is very good, and it is worth trying Tiroler Speckknodel (they are boiled dumplings with bacon, served most often with cabbage and salad) and Tiroler Grostl (fried bacon, with onions and potatoes served with poached eggs).
Places to visit:  The pedestrian center of Ratenberg and the promenade are undoubtedly some of the most beautiful places in the city. The city is located at the foot of a medieval castle from the 10th century, of which only ruins remain, but they have not lost their charm and beauty.
